193 Atopic eczema in adulthood and the risk of dementia: A population-based cohort study

It is becoming increasingly clear that inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of dementia, which is projected to affect 132 million individuals by 2050. Data on associated conditions and early markers of disease are needed to target individuals for early intervention and monitoring. Atopic eczema has recently been shown to be common among older adults and is now considered a systemic inflammatory disorder, but there are little data on its associations with dementia. Using a previously validated algorithm to identify patients with atopic eczema in a primary care database representative of the general population in the UK (THIN), we performed a longitudinal cohort study to test the hypothesis that atopic eczema confers an increased risk of dementia, independent of cardiometabolic risk factors, and that the strength of association increases with atopic eczema disease severity.
