Authors: Petcu A, Ghib LJ, Grad SM, Popovici C, Rogojan L, Rednic NV, Rednic S Abstract Gastrointestinal tract involvement is the most common visceral affectation in systemic sclerosis (SSc), but the manifestations may vary in extension and severity. Endoscopic and histopathological gastroesophageal findings were investigated in patients with SSc. A total of 79 consecutive patients with definite SSc were enrolled in a cross sectional study. Clinical data were collected, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsies from gastric mucosa were performed in all cases. Fifty-seven (72.1%) out of 79 SSc patients had gastr...

Conclusion: In cases of ISS where GERD is a potential causative factor, resection by endoscopy may be the treatment of choice. Once GERD is effectively treated and if symptoms are still present, one should consider tracheal resection.

ConclusionIn cases that are initially AB negative and CDX-2 positive, CDX-2 was demonstrated to have a potential prognostic utility for early detection of progression to BE. CDX-2 expression is significantly predictive for risk of goblet cell IM development 40 to 45  months after initial biopsy.

Authors: Sun YM, Gao Y, Gao F Abstract Background/Aims: Recently, esophageal mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) and post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index have been proposed, which can increase the diagnostic role of multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH recording (MII/pH) for differentiating patients with heartburn. Therefore, our aim is to investigate the role of esophageal proximal MNBI, distal MNBI, and PSPW index in differentiating Chinese patients with heartburn. Methods: Patients with heartburn from the Beijing Anzhen Hospital, who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy ...

Abstract Obesity is a global health epidemic with considerable economic burden. Surgical solutions have become increasingly popular following technical advances leading to sustained efficacy and reduced risk. Sleeve gastrectomy accounts for almost half of all bariatric surgeries worldwide but concerns regarding its relationship with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been a topic of debate. GERD, including erosive esophagitis, is highly prevalent in the obese population. The role of pre-operative endoscopy in bariatric surgery has been controversial. Two schools of thought exist on the matter, one that bel...

Background and Aims: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common prevalent disease. We aimed to assess the dynamic changes in the peripheral T lymphocytes and lymphocytes infiltrating the esophageal mucosa after treatment with proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) in patients with GERD. Patients and Methods: A total of 200 patients who presented with upper GIT symptoms were included in this prospective study. All patients were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, and complete blood count. Upper endoscopy was performed to detect the grade of GERD, followed by 4 quadrant biopsies before and 1 month after...

ConclusionThe modified sleeve gastrectomy combined with laparoscopic Rossetti fundoplication seems to be a safe, effective procedure and a suitable alternative to gastric bypass in obese patients with GERD.

Authors: Michel F, Dannesberger R, Stroh T, Fritsche R, Ahrens P Abstract The findings of functional endoscopy (upper esophageal sphincter insufficiency, cardia insufficiency, esophagitis, gastric heterotopia, axial sliding hernia, and visible aerosols) can be traced back to pharyngeal acid exposure by oropharyngeal pH measurement. Significantly increased pharyngeal acid loads are seen in gastric heterotopy and axial sliding hernia. For all measured statistics, the pharyngeal acid load is in the pathological or even very pathological range. The value of functional endoscopy in the context of laryngopharyngeal reflu...
