Should Patients With Malignant Gastric Outlet Obstruction Receive Stents or Surgery?

Malignant gastric outlet obstruction (MGOO) typically is defined as mechanical blockage of the stomach or proximal small bowel as a result of tumor.1 MGOO commonly is encountered in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancers, most commonly pancreatic cancer.1,2 MGOO is intensely unpleasant for patients (who already are compromised by their preexisting malignancy), often manifesting with symptoms such as nausea, intractable vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pain, and protein-calorie malnutrition,3,4 MGOO is seen most commonly in patients with advanced and unresectable disease.
