Antimicrobial Resistance Genes, Cassettes, and Plasmids Present in Salmonella enterica Associated With United States Food Animals

This study revealed that a diverse group of plasmids, carrying AR genes, are responsible for the phenotypic resistance seen in Salmonella isolated from United States food animals. It was also determined that many plasmids carry similar ARCs. Introduction Non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica is one of the most common causes of foodborne illnesses globally, with an estimated 1.2 million cases each year in the United States alone (CDC, 2013). Symptoms range from self-limiting gastrointestinal illness to sepsis. These infections can lead to death unless treated with antibiotics (Crump et al., 2015). Unfortunately, antimicrobial resistance (AR) has been increasing since the 1980s (Crump et al., 2015). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers drug-resistant non-typhoidal Salmonella to be a serious level threat to human health, and currently reports that 8% of Salmonella infections are either multidrug resistant (resistant to three or more classes of antimicrobials), or resistant to an antibiotic used for treatment, such as ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin (CDC, 2013). Up to 94% of United States Salmonella infections are estimated to be foodborne, demonstrating the importance of investigating Salmonella isolated from food animals (Scallan et al., 2011). In this study, 48 PCV2 strains were isolated in China between 2016 and 2018 and the genetic diversity of these PCV2 isolates was determined. Results showed that these PCV2 isolates were classified into genotypes PCV2a (4 of 48), PCV2b (13 of 48) and PCV2d (31 of 48). Among them, 54.5% isolated in 2016, 65.2% isolated in 2017 and 71.4% isolated in 2018 belonged to PCV2d. It indicated that the prevalence of PCV2d genotype increased. We present the case of a 42-year-old male, who had previously traveled to an endemic plague area and then presented hyperpyrexia, hypotension, and inflammatory inguinal adenopathy. Despite the very characteristic clinical picture, nobody (before admission to our hospital) suspected plague. An effective combination of antibiotics and intensive treatment was initiated only on the fifth day of illness. The patient went into septic shock, respiratory failure, and death. CONCLUSIONS: . Mechanical, thermal shock, and enzymatic pre-treatments are necessary for the rupture of the cystic wall of Giardia spp. making it the highest-yielding bg molecular marker for detecting cyst DNA.
