Although the transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (TV-ICD) has a proven mortality benefit in multiple patient populations, there are significant risks both with implantation and years after its placement. The S-ICD may help prevent some of these complications. Currently, the S-ICD ...

CONCLUSION: Thrombophilias are inherited or acquired predispositions to vascular thrombosis and have been associated with thrombosis of the arteriovenous fistula. Patients on hemodialysis with recurrent vascular access thrombosis and presence of thrombophilia should be evaluated about the need for anticoagulant therapy with a vitamin K antagonist. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of cinacalcet in managing chronic dialysis patients with severe SHPT. METHODS: This retrospective study included 26 patients [age: 52 ± 12 years; 55% females; time on dialysis: 54 (4-236) months] on hemodialysis (N = 18) or peritoneal dialysis (N = 8) with severe SHPT (intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level> 600 pg/mL) and hyperphosphatemia and/or persistent hypercalcemia treated with cinacalcet. The patients were followed for 12 months. Their serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and iPTH levels were measured at baseline and o...

CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the use of sertraline may be beneficial to reduce the number of symptoms and ID interventions, although there was no statistically significant difference in the blood pressure levels. PMID: 31419272 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractFibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 is a bone-derived hormone regulating serum inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentration. FGF23 is also involved in the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD)-mineral and bone disorder. Serum FGF23 concentration begins to increase early in the progression of CKD and can be remarkably high in hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease. It has been reported that high FGF23 concentration is a risk factor for cardiac dysfunction, atherosclerosis, infection or systemic inflammation in CKD patients. FGF23 was also shown to induce cardiac hypertrophy directly acting on cardiomyocyte...
