AbstractThe causes of the increased cardiovascular risk associated with kidney diseases partly reside in the chronic kidney disease –mineral bone disorder (CKD–MBD) syndrome. Three cardiovascular risk factors [hyperphosphatemia, vascular calcification, and elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)] levels have been discovered within the CKD–MBD over the last decades. In addition, sclerostin is recently presented as a ne w bone and vascular disease biomarker. This 22-kDa glycoprotein, secreted mainly by osteocytes, is a soluble inhibitor of the canonical Wnt pathway that has a pivotal role in bone biolo...

AbstractWe herein report the case of myeloperoxidase (MPO) anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis with anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) antibody positivity that successfully treated with mizoribine (MZR) as an immunosuppressive drug for remission maintenance therapy after the initiation of dialysis in addition to plasma exchange (PE) and glucocorticoid treatment to control the disease condition. A 79-year-old woman developed serious renal dysfunction and pulmonary alveolar hemorrhaging due to MPO –ANCA and anti-GBM antibody double-positive vasculitis. She was started on hemodial...

Publication date: Available online 12 October 2019Source: Journal of Membrane ScienceAuthor(s): Moshe Herzberg, Soumya Pandit, Meagan S. Mauter, Yoram OrenAbstractIon exchange membranes (IEMs) often suffer from biofouling, which reduces ion exchange rates and increases energy consumption in water treatment processes, such as electrodialysis, reverse electrodialysis, membrane capacitive deionization, and Donnan dialysis, and in energy devices, such as microbial fuel cells. In the present study, microbial biofilm formation was studied on anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and a cation exchange membranes (CEMs) of the homogeneou...

Revision using distal inflow (RUDI) is currently proposed in patients on hemodialysis having a high flow access (HFA;>2  L/min) or hemodialysis access-induced distal ischemia (HAIDI). However, a recurrence of high flow or hand ischemia is not unusual in the years after RUDI. The aim of the present study was to describe changes in flow characteristics and arterial diameters in the dialysis arm after RUDI for HFA.

Authors: Salguero MV, Al-Obaide MAI, Singh R, Siepmann T, Vasylyeva TL Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a potent endotoxin present in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, causes chronic immune responses associated with inflammation. In the present study, the association between LPS and the dysbiosis of Gram-negative bacteria in the gut microbiome was determined in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD; stages 4 and 5, not on dialysis) compared with healthy individuals. Microbiome diversity was analyzed in patients with T2DM-CKD and healthy controls by sequenci...

Paclitaxel-coated balloons are used to reduce neointimal hyperplasia in native arteriovenous (AV) fistulas. However, no study specifically evaluated their effect on venous anastomotic stenosis of dialysis grafts. We aimed to compare the efficacy of angioplasty with drug-coated balloons (DCBs) and angioplasty with conventional balloons (CBs) for venous anastomotic stenosis in dysfunctional AV grafts.
