The trials and tribulations of conducting an m-health pilot randomized controlled trial to improve oral cancer therapy adherence: recommendations for future multisite, non-drug clinical trials

Integrating mobile phone-based health (m-health) interventions into healthcare systems is one solution to improve access to services for the growing number of patients with chronic illness. Practical challenge...

In this study, analysis of antioxidant defense was performed on the blood samples from 184 "aged" individuals aged 65-90+ years, and compared to the blood samples of 37 individuals just about at the beginning of aging, aged 55-59 years. Statistically significant decreases of Zn,Cu-superoxide dismutase (SOD-1), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were observed in elderly people in comparison with the control group. Moreover, an inverse correlation between the activities of SOD-1, CAT, and GSH-Px and the age of the examined persons was found. No age-related changes in glutathione reductas...

Fisetin (3,3-,4-,7-tetrahydroxyflavone), a naturally occurring flavonoid, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has a 5-year survival rate lower than that of most other carcinomas, and can create functional and aesthetic problems for the patient. New therapies for OSCC are necessary, and treatment using plant-derived natural substances has recently become a trend. It has been suggested that autophagy may play an important role in cancer therapy. Several studies demonstrated that autophagy inhibition enhances apoptotic cell death. Therefore, autophagy inhibition migh...

ConclusionsResults of the present study showed that the oral administration ofS. cerevisiae UFMG A-905 protected mice against mucositis induced by 5-FU, and that this effect was potentiated when the yeast was enriched with selenium.

The therapeutic potential of epigallocatechin‑3‑gallate against human oral squamous cell carcinoma through inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis: In vitro and in vivo murine xenograft study. Mol Med Rep. 2019 Jun 04;: Authors: Yoshimura H, Yoshida H, Matsuda S, Ryoke T, Ohta K, Ohmori M, Yamamoto S, Kiyoshima T, Kobayashi M, Sano K Abstract Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the oral region. Despite current therapeutic strategies, the survival rate has not been improved for several decades. Thus, it is important to devel...

We examined the relationship between the plasma concentration of drugs and clinical findings, such as side effects and treatment effects, at our hospital. In this symposium review, we introduce our results based on the treatment of patients with renal cell carcinoma. PMID: 31155535 [PubMed - in process]

In this study we used a fragment-based approach to create new flexible G-quadruplex (G4) DNA interactive small molecules with good calculated oral drug-like properties, based on quinoline and triazole heterocycles. G4 melting temperature and Polymerase Chain Reaction-stop assays showed that two of these compounds are selective G4 ligands, since they were able to induce and stabilize G4s in a dose- and DNA sequence-dependent manner. Molecular docking studies have suggested plausible quadruplex binding to both the G-quartet and groove, with the quinoline module playing the major role. Compounds were screened for cytotoxicity...

In this study, a series of novel HDAC inhibitors, using 1,2,4-oxadiazole-containing as the cap group, were synthesized and evaluated in vitro. Compound 14b, N-hydroxy-2-(methyl((3-(1-(4-methylbenzyl)piperidin-4-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)methyl)amino)pyrimidine-5-carboxamide, displayed the most potent histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition, especially against HDAC1, 2, and 3 with IC50 values of 1.8, 3.6 and 3.0 nM, respectively. In vitro antiproliferative studies confirmed that 14b was more potent than SAHA, with IC50 values against 12 types of cancer cell lines ranging from 9.8 to 44.9 nM. The results of Wester...
