Omega-3s are a potent way to treat depression without resorting to dangerous prescription medications

(Natural News) There are many natural ways to remedy poor mood and depression that do not involve the use of pharmaceutical drugs. One of these alternative approaches is to eat larger amounts of healthy foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Scientific research shows that the intake of omega-3 fatty acids in a diet influences the risk...

Abstract PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: The impact of mental health disorders (MHDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) on healthcare utilization (HCU) in patients with cancer is an understudied phenomenon. LITERATURE SEARCH: A literature search of studies published prior to January 2018 that examined HCU in patients with preexisting MHDs or SUDs diagnosed with cancer was conducted. DATA EVALUATION: The research team evaluated 22 studies for scientific rigor and examined significant trends in HCU, as well as types of the MHD, SUD, and cancer studied. SYNTHESIS: The heterogeneity of HCU outcome measures, MH...

When a person gets retired, he gets released from all the work and probably has nothing to do. When a person gets retired, there is no chance that he gets any work or opportunity and he is left with nothing in his life unless he tries to make his retirement life better. Once you get retired, you think that you are now free from all the responsibilities and tensions but gradually you will realize that being free is not what you want. Being free all the time means getting bored all the time. When you are free and bored, you may think a lot of things that you should not, which creates negativity, anxiety and depression. This ...

Publication date: Available online 22 April 2019Source: Journal of Anxiety DisordersAuthor(s): Ki Eun Shin, Michelle G. NewmanAbstractDespite attention on overlap and distinction between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), interpersonal specificity (distinct, prototypical interpersonal features) between the disorders has been understudied. There is emerging evidence for such specificity (e.g., Erickson et al., 2016), but most studies relied on self-report, and not all studies controlled for shared variance between the disorders, complicating interpretation...

This study investigated whether progesterone affects depressant and anxious behaviors via gut microbiota. In ovariectomized (OVX) mice, treatment with progesterone improved depressive and anxious behaviors, and gut microbiota composition was significantly changed. In particular, increased Lactobacillus spp. were observed in these mice. Reduction of microbiota by antibiotic treatment abolished the effect of progesterone on depression and anxiety. In addition, administration of Lactobacillus (L.) reuteri that was increased by progesterone also reduced the depressant behavior in OVX mice, and BDNF gene expression was elevated...

UchitelAbstractAcid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) regulate synaptic activities and play important roles in neurodegenerative diseases. It has been reported that homomeric ASIC-1a channels are expressed in neurons of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) of the auditory system in the CNS. During synaptic transmission, acidification of the synaptic cleft presumably due to the co-release of neurotransmitter and H+ from synaptic vesicles activates postsynaptic ASIC-...

Conclusions: This study improves the knowledge on clinical significance of RBD symptoms in ET patients. Our preliminary findings demonstrate that presence of RBD in ET is associated with neurocognitive impairment, but not with cardiac autonomic dysfunction. Further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate whether ET patients with RBD will develop a frank dementia over the time. Introduction Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological disease among adults. Traditionally, it is defined by a core of clinical motor symptoms characterized by kinetic/postural tremor affecting hand, head, or other par...

Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate VS-related tinnitus with respect to both patients' hearing status and psychological condition. Our results suggest that tinnitus distress strongly affects VS patients' QoL and that its characteristics are similar to primary tinnitus. An intervention for VS-related tinnitus, therefore, should assess to what extent tinnitus bothers patients, and it should reduce any unpleasant emotions that may exacerbate symptoms. This approach should improve their QoL. Introduction Vestibular schwannoma (VS)—or acoustic neuroma—is a be...

Conclusions: Lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, sleep, and social activity appear to be associated with cognitive function among older people. Physical activity and appropriate durations of sleep and conversation are important for cognitive function. Introduction Dementia is a major public health issue worldwide, with a serious burden for patients, caregivers, and society, as well as substantial economic impacts (1). Although the prevalence of late-life cognitive impairment and dementia are expected to increase in future, effective disease-modifying treatments are currently unavailable. Therefore, unders...
