Studies have demonstrated the presence of a strong association between serum uric acid (SUA) and acute kidney injury (AKI) consistently across several disease models. Exposure to SUA at different time periods and concentrations has reliably resulted in AKI whether assessed by conventional or novel biomarkers or by kinetic estimated glomerular filtration rate (KeGFR) engineered for non-steady dynamic states. In experimental models, moderate hyperuricemia was associated with an absence of intrarenal crystals, manifestation of tubular injury, macrophage infiltration, and increased expression of inflammatory mediators that wer...

However, objective signs of congestion have yet to be associated with delirium. Portal vein flow pulsatility is a congestion marker that may identify a sub-group of patients at risk.MethodsA retrospective study followed by a prospective study were performed in car...

This article reviews the research from 2000 to 2018 regarding the mechanism of acupuncture for hypertension, and we summarize the current knowledge about using acupuncture for hypertension. We found that the mechanism whereby acupuncture lowers blood pressure is related to the regulation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, vascular endothelium, oxidative stress, neuroendocrine system, and so on. Besides, there may be cross-talk between multiple systems and multiple targets. We also investigate the influence factors of acupuncture for hypertension. These results may provide evidence and research ideas for the treatment...

This study of selected fruits of the Oleaceae and Solanaceae families quantified the contents of free and bound phenolics (FP and BP) and their in vitro antioxidant activity and inhibitory potential towards enzymes relevant for hypertension and hyperglycemia management. For all the fruits considered, FP extracted at 30 °C (FP-30 °C) were the predominant fraction of the total phenolics and had higher antioxidant activities. The highest inhibition (100%) towards angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE), α-amylase and α-glucosidase was obtained respectively with extracts from tomato (FP-30 °C extrac...

Huber, Fernanda B. LimaAbstractAimsAfter menopause, women are more responsive to stress and more prone to exhibit hypertension, which elevates the risk of cardiac diseases. This vulnerability is due, in part, to the decline of ovarian steroids plasma levels. The 4-vinylciclohexane diepoxide (VCD) causes a gradual depletion of ovarian follicles causing loss of the normal ovarian function and a hormonal profile comparable to menopause in h...

(CNN) — Hey, sleepyheads. What you believe about sleep may be nothing but a pipe dream. Many of us have notions about sleep that have little basis in fact and may even be harmful to our health, according to researchers at NYU Langone Health’s School of Medicine, who conducted a study published Tuesday in the journal Sleep Health. “There’s such a link between good sleep and our waking success,” said lead study investigator Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. “And yet we often find ourselves debunking myths, whether ...
