Study of Independent Living Residents of a Continuing Care Senior Housing Community: Sociodemographic and Clinical Associations of Cognitive, Physical, and Mental Health

The US population over age 65 increased from 36 million in 2003 to 45 million in 2013, and is expected to total 84 million by 2050.1,2 Aging is a major risk factor for decline in cognitive and everyday functioning capacities and autonomy. Impairment in cognitive function is cited as the number one concern for older adults.3 Although most older adults would prefer to age in place, this goal becomes difficult to sustain as cognitive and physical disabilities increase, barriers to autonomy grow, and adequate caregiving becomes unavailable or unaffordable .
