Impairments in dyspnea, exercise capacity, physical activity and quality of life of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation survivors compared with healthy individuals: a cross sectional study. Physiother Theory Pract. 2019 Apr 08;:1-12 Authors: Boşnak Güçlü M, Barğı G, Sucak GT Abstract BACKGROUND: A limited number of studies have reported impairments in physical activity, exercise capacity and quality of life (QOL) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogeneic-HSCT) recipients. We aimed to compare dyspnea, exercise capacity, physical activity and QOL in allogeneic-HSCT recipients with age-gender matched healthy individuals, since this has not been investigated hitherto. METHODS: A total of 80 allogeneic-HSCT recipients (>100 days status post-transplantation) (38.88 ± 13.25 years) and 60 healthy individuals (35.92 ± 10.83 years) were compared. Exercise capacity [6-minute walk test (6-MWT)], physical activity level (total and active energy expenditure, moderate and severe physical activity duration, number of steps, average metabolic equivalent, lying down and sleeping duration) [metabolic holter], QOL [European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QOL Questionnaire (EORTCQOL)], dyspnea [Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea scale] and pulmonary functions [spirometry] were evaluated. Clinical trials #NCT03606005. RESULTS: Six-...

What if I never took this job? Where am I going to be in five years? Will I still be doing what I do now? If not, how am I going to pay my bills? What if he never calls? Wh...

ConclusionsIn our qualitative study, the most common and most bothersome experiences reported by women treated for ovarian cancer were symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain and tiredness; side effects of hair loss, nausea and tiredness/fatigue; and impacts relating to concerns about the future, physical functioning and work limitations. We suggest that clinicians measure these experiences consistently and take them into consideration when making treatment decisions.

This study identified factors associated with suicidal ideation (SI) among a rarely studied subgroup of Veterans: those with cancer. Methods: Veterans (age M = 61.83) with cancer (N= 175) referred for psychological evaluation completed measures of pain, sleep, depressive, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms. SI was defined by endorsing on paper-and-pencil questionnaire thoughts of killing oneself in the past 2 weeks or during clinical interview. Results: 25.1% reported SI. Compared to those without SI, Veterans with SI had higher ratings on measures of depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms. History of suicide attempt(s) was included...

During his last three years as an undergraduate, Cody Aros spent a lot of time asking strangers deeply personal questions. As a volunteer intake coordinator at a free clinic in Menlo Park, California, Aros ’ duties included asking the people seeking care about their interest in HIV testing. For a lot of people, asking strangers about their sexual histories would be a nightmare. But not Aros. With every interaction, he tried to create a safe space, in which people could share their histories and conc erns without fearing judgment.“There is an element of vulnerability in medicine that I found myself really drawn t...

Abstract Glucocorticoid (GC) signaling varies among individuals, and this variation may relate to individual differences in health outcomes. To determine if and which aspects of signaling (basal, circadian, integrative, or reactivity) are associated with specific health outcomes, we reviewed recent studies that relate GCs to health outcomes. We identified papers through PubMed and reviewed 100 original research articles related to mental health, cardiovascular health, cancer, diabetes, obesity, pulmonary health, sleep, and fitness. Many studies reported elevated GC secretion associated with worse health, but this ...

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of preoperative sleep quality on acute postoperative pain in breast cancer patients. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI) was used to assess the overall sleep status of women scheduled for unilateral modified radical mastectomy in the past month. Based on the responses, patients were allocated to good sleep group or poor sleep group. Postoperatively, acute pain was assessed using the numerical rating score in the first 24 hours; in addition, the requirement of analgesics and the incidence of postoperative complications were recorded. A total of 108 breas...
