3D Ultrasound gives clinicians clearer picture to treat gynaecological cancer

(University of Western Ontario) By transforming a conventional ultrasound probe, already found in most clinics, the technology can provide a 360-degree, three-dimensional view of surgical tools and surrounding tissue and organs. It provides a clearer and more accurate picture in the operating room for clinicians who need to precisely insert needles into the tumour for a procedure called interstitial brachytherapy, a type of targeted radiation therapy that uses intense energy to kill cancer cells in the tumour from the inside out.

CONCLUSION: PDR salvage brachytherapy in local recurrent previously irradiated prostate cancer is efficient with low late toxicity. Salvage-brachytherapy represents a valuable therapeutic option for the treatment of previously irradiated locally recurrent prostate cancer. PMID: 32593646 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Alongside radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy is an effective treatment modality for prostate cancer patients irrespective of risk group. Nevertheless, a considerable number of these patients are faced with isolated local failure of prostate cancer after radiation therapy with curative intent. Up to 10% of patients with a low-risk, 10-20% with an intermediate-risk and up to 30-37% with high-risk tumors will suffer local recurrence during follow-up [1 –4]. Thus, the possibility of an effective local salvage therapy is of paramount importance for curative therapy of a prostate cancer recurrence.

Healthcare systems are often compared with the aviation industry. Progress in both is highly desired but must always be achieved with safety in mind. Everyone wants to get from point A to point B faster and more comfortably, but how much risk of uncertainty is one ready to accept to achieve that extra speed? Both industries also share the aspect of competition for customers. In the field of localized prostate cancer, patients have an ever-increasing choice of options: radical surgery (open vs laparoscopic vs robot-assisted), external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) (with photons or protons), brachytherapy (low-dose rate or h...

CONCLUSIONS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we did not observe higher rate of BCR after TRT for nonmetastatic CaP patients after definitive local therapy. Based on these data, others and we have outlined a phase I/II trial assessing the safety and benefits of TRT in select men with secondary symptomatic hypogonadism who have no active disease after definitive local CaP therapy with curative intent. We report on the efficacy and adverse effects of the currently available local salvage modalities including salvage radical prostatectomy, high dose rate and low dose rate brachytherapy, cryotherapy, high intensity focused ultrasound, and stereotactic body RT. We additionally discuss diagnosis of oligometastatic disease on imaging and current approaches to treatment with either radiation or surgery. While a full review of chemotherapy and advanced androgen therapies is beyond the scope of this article we briefly discuss their use in the treatment of newly diagnosed recurrence after radiation. Conclusion: The efficacy of brainstem gliomas—treated with CyberKnife is efficacious with mild toxicity. Introduction Brainstem gliomas (BSGs) account for 5–15% of brain tumors and more likely happen in children (1). BSGs constitute at least 20% of childhood brain neoplasms (2), and the peak age is 7–9 years. In contrast, BSGs is rare in the adult population and account for only 1.5–2.5% of brain glioma, with a peak age of 40–70 years (1). Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma(DIPG) was the most common type of BSG is that could invade the whole brainstem including midbrain, pons as well as me...
