Bioimpedance Underestimates Bone Mineral Content in Association With High Levels of Phosphate

Recently, Zhou Y et  al.1 published an interesting study that compared body composition measurements obtained from the gold standard dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) and bioimpedance (BIA). The authors stated that these two methods were compared in previous studies in patients on hemodialysis (HD)2 and peritoneal dial ysis,3 showing that BIA overestimated fat mass (FM) in patients on HD and underestimated in patients on peritoneal dialysis. However, because there are several commercially available devices, the accuracy of BIA devices to measure the human body composition might vary largely.
