The Role of Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolism

Patients with cancer are at increased risk for developing venous thromboembolism due to disease-related and treatment-related risk factors. Low-molecular-weight heparins are the standard of care for prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer; however, direct oral anticoagulants offer a convenient dosing option for patients who have compelling reasons to avoid low-molecular-weight heparin.
