Georgousopoulou, Anestis Tripitsidis, Christos Pitsavos, Demosthenes B. PanagiotakosAbstractIndividual socioeconomic status is linked to obesity risk, though, less is known about the influence of an area's socio-environmental conditions on obesity/overweight prevalence. This association was investigated using obesity/overweight data collected from 2,445 individuals in Athens greater area, who were randomly enrolled in ATTICA study, during 2001 to 2002, and factors related to educational and economic level, population density, immigrants and green urban areas. Thematic mapping illustrated the socio-environmental status and highlighted the obesity/overweight prevalence across the municipalities of Athens. Global statistical models revealed that high socio-environmental status, educational and economic level were inversely associated with obesity/overweight (p

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the genetic variants of the ADIPOQ gene (+45T>G and +276G>T) with MetS among a relocated indigenous Temiar subtribe community in Malaysia. This cross-sectional study investigated 123 relocated Temiar volunteers in Kelantan. Modified NCEP ATP III criteria were used to diagnose MetS. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and genotyped for ADIPOQ +45T>G and +276G>T polymorphisms using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. Associations between ADIPOQ +45T>G (rs2241766) and +276G>T (rs150...

Conclusion: PsA is characterized by an increase in cardiovascular morbidity in relation with insulin resistance. Current treatments seem to improve this risk with a decrease in cardiovascular mortality in comparison with patients with plaque psoriasis but this requires confirmation in larger prospective studies.

ConclusionBlood glucose level, higher body mass index, inappropriate antibiotics use, neuropathy and advanced grade of diabetic foot ulcer were independent predictors of amputation. Thus, special emphasis for patients having neuropathy and advanced grade of diabetic foot ulcer as well as weight reduction, managing hyperglycaemia, and appropriate antibiotics prescription practice would decrease untoward effects of diabetic foot ulcer.

ConclusionsLepRb sequences between residues 921 and 960 mediate the STAT3 and LepRb phosphorylation-independent second signal that contributes to the control of energy balance and metabolism by leptin/LepRb. In addition to confirming the inhibitory role of the region (residues 961–1013) containing Tyr985, we also identified the region containing residues 1013–1053 (which contains no Tyr residues) as a second potential mediator of LepRb inhibition. Thus, the intracellular domain of LepRb mediates multiple Tyr-independent signals.

Authors: Sucker C Abstract Venous thromboembolisms and pulmonary embolisms are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. The increased risk of thrombotic events caused by the physiological changes during pregnancy alone does not justify any medical antithrombotic prophylaxis. However, if there are also other risk factors such as a history of thromboses, hormonal stimulation as part of fertility treatment, thrombophilia, increased age of the pregnant woman, severe obesity or predisposing concomitant illnesses, the risk of thrombosis should be re-evaluated - if possible by a coagulation speciali...

Conclusion: The majority of the programmes were neither evidence-based, nor did they follow recommendations from Danish National Board of Health. Few programmes addressed the role of habits or social participation. Occupational therapists appear to be under-utilized as providers of the programmes.Significance: Occupational therapists have a role to play in weight loss programmes, because of their training in activity analysis and their consideration of people, environments, and occupations. These components are included in the recommendations about psychosocial aspects and everyday life from the Danish National Board of He...

ConclusionsThis study provides important evidence for planners, urban designers, and policy makers on the significance of built environment, in general, and street network configuration, in particular, within home- and school-environments. One rule of thumb would be to design a well-connected street network with relatively denser connections and reduced direction changes within the neighbourhood – not only within a couple of blocks of homes and schools but also within their larger fabric (800–1600 mt buffers).
