Stone disease is truly the “bread and butter” of global Urology. Not only does it serve as an essential component of the history of our specialty but also one could consider it the very nidus that lamellated into the expansive field in which we now practice. Prior to being physicians, urologists evolved from barbers who would travel the countryside offering haircuts and bladder stone removals. We have, fortunately, moved on from the time that stones were blindly extracted by traveling barbers, through the urethra or a perineal stab incision, resulting in mortality in more than half the patients due to bleeding or sepsis.
