[WHO] Cabo Verde, a small nation of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean has made giant strides in health care provision. When the country first gained independence in 1975, there were only 13 doctors on the islands, the average life expectancy was 56 years, and the infant mortality rate was high, at 108 deaths per 1 000 births.
