A developmental assessment of clinical reasoning in preclinical medical education.

CONCLUSION: The assessment rubric allowed students in the early stages of clinical reasoning development to understand their trajectory and provided faculty a framework from which to give meaningful feedback. The multi-disciplinary background of the course team supported a systematic and robust course and assessment design process. The authors strongly encourage other colleges to support the use of collaborative and multi-disciplinary course teams. PMID: 30935299 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSION: NOTCH1 mutations were frequently detected in T All patients; however, these mutations did not affect the T ALL patient's outcome. The high prevalence of NOTCH1 mutations at diagnosis could be used for detection of minimal residual disease in T ALL. PMID: 31796666 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT-based metabolic volumetric parameters might be predicators for survival in ovarian CCC patients. Cautions should be taken when interpreting the results due to the small sample size. PMID: 31796665 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that a higher level of miR-105 predicts poorer prognosis in esophageal cancer patients, and miR-105 can promote esophageal cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. PMID: 31796663 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Diomede F, Marconi GD, Serroni M, Pizzicannella G, Trubiani O, Pizzicannella J Abstract Ascorbic acid (AS), also known as vitamin C or ascorbate, is an essential dietary nutrient which plays a vital role in biological processes through various different mechanisms, in particular for the biosynthesis of collagen. The aim of the study was to establish the possibility of enhancing the osteogenic differentiation potential by manipulating the cellular micro-environment, through AS supplementation in human gingival mesenchymal stem cells (hGMSCs) at different concentrations, such as 60 and 90 μg/mL, for three...

Authors: Bumbat M, Wang M, Liang W, Ye P, Sun W, Liu B Abstract Long-term cryopreservation of the viability and metabolic state of cells in cancer cell/tissue specimens has significant implications for diagnostic verification of disease progression in cancer patients and selection of effective treatment options via development of the patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models for drug screening. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) on the expression of BCL-2 family genes (BCL-2, BAX, and BAD) that are involved in the growth and development of breast cancers. MCF-7 cell...

Authors: Durkova J, Boldis M, Kovacova S Abstract Over the course of the last two decades, there has been a decrease in the incidence of head and neck cancers thanks to a decreasing prevalence of smoking. However, a new risk factor has been coming to the fore: human papillomavirus infection (HPV). HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPC) is more sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which translates to a much better prognosis with conventional treatment protocols than tumours that are HPV-negative. Traditional therapeutic interventions are associated with substantial morbidity and have a g...

Authors: Hubacek JA, Kurcova I, Maresova V, Pankova A, Stepankova L, Zvolska K, Lanska V, Kralikova E Abstract AIM: Plasma values of nicotine and its metabolites are highly variable, and this variability has a strong genetic influence. In our study, we analysed the impact of common polymorphisms associated with smoking on the plasma values of nicotine, nicotine metabolites and their ratios and investigated the potential effect of these polymorphisms and nicotine metabolite ratios on the successful treatment of tobacco dependence. METHODS: Five variants (rs16969968, rs6474412, rs578776, rs4105144 and rs3733829) ...

Authors: Balatkova Z, Cada Z, Hruba S, Komarc M, Cerny R Abstract AIMS: Preoperative chemical vestibular ablation can reduce vestibular symptoms in patients who have gone through vestibular schwannoma resection. The goal of this study was to determine whether chemical vestibular prehabituation influences the patients' post-operative perception of visual stimulation, mental status and quality of life. We also tried to find out whether increases of optokinetic nystagmus, measured by routine electronystagmography, correlate with subjective symptoms. METHODS: We preoperatively administered (2 months prior to surger...
