Nurses First

I often hear students in direct entry nurse practitioner (NP) programs express disdain for the RN part of their program. They are anxious to “get on with it” and become NPs. They are missing the vital fact that nursing is at the core of all we do as NPs. We are advanced practice RNs, after all. But what really makes us nurses? What is the essence of nursing? Can you describe what makes nursing unique from other health professions?
