Current Understanding of Medication Use in Pregnancy/Lactation and Neonates: What Are the Key Knowledge Gaps?

Of the 6 million women who are pregnant in the United States each year, an estimated 90% are prescribed at least one medication while pregnant or lactating, and many receive multiple concomitant medications with significant potential for adverse drug-drug interactions. In addition to potential harmful effects on the developing fetus, the physiologic changes that accompany pregnancy may affect the way drugs are absorbed, distributed, and metabolized in the mother, resulting in standard doses being too high or too low.
