Plasma total testosterone and risk of incident atrial fibrillation: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most commonly observed chronic cardiac arrhythmias in the United States [1]. Lifetime risks for AF are high (1 in 6), even in the absence of antecedent congestive heart failure or myocardial infarction [2]. Despite advancements in treatment, rates of AF, and the associated morbidity and mortality, continue to increase over time [3]. AF prevalence tends to increase with age and is higher in men than in women [4]. The underlying mechanisms of these age and sex differences have not been fully elucidated [5,6].
