Pancreaticobiliary metastasis presenting as primary mucinous ovarian neoplasm: A systematic literature review

Ackroyd, Lauren Goetsch, Jennifer Brown, Karen Houck, Congli Wang, Enrique HernandezAbstractTrue primary mucinous ovarian carcinomas are rarer than originally thought and their clinical behavior and treatment response are different than more common epithelial ovarian carcinomas. Secondary ovarian neoplasms often mimic the clinical and histological features of mucinous ovarian cancer making their diagnosis, and therefore treatment, more difficult. Misdiagnosis can have a significant impact on both treatment and prognosis. The majority of these secondary ovarian neoplasms arise from the gastrointestinal tract, with mucinous histology often of pancreaticobiliary origin. Our study objective was to review current evidence distinguishing pancreaticobiliary ovarian metastasis from primary mucinous ovarian carcinoma. We utilized a PubMed search using MeSH terms and selected articles were reviewed, synthesized and summarized. Thirty-nine articles were included in the review. The clinical, gross, histological and immunohistochemical features distinguishing primary mucinous ovarian carcinomas from pancreaticobiliary ovarian metastasis were identified. Compared to primary mucinous ovarian carcinoma, metastatic pancreaticobiliary tumors are more often bilateral,

In this study, all tumors were adenocarcinomas that originate from ducts or ductules but infiltrate to involve all components of the pancreas. Other tumors that originate in pancreas may have different properties and a future study of in situ tumor is likely needed to determine whether the tumor tissue retains a structural remnant of its originating tissue. Methods and Materials Histology Sample Preparation Samples of normal human pancreas from five patients and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissue samples from ten patients were obtained with informed consent and institutional approval (University Health Network Toro...

In conclusion, this study demonstrates that WG-391D exhibits strong antitumor activity against ovarian cancer and indicates that the down-regulation of CDC25B by inhibitors could provide a rationale for ovarian cancer therapy. Introduction Ovarian cancer is one of the most common malignances in females. The American Cancer Society estimated that there were 22,240 cases of ovarian cancer, and 14,070 deaths, in the United States in 2018 (1). During its early stages, ovarian cancer can be asymptomatic; hence, ~70% of patients have advanced disease when diagnosed and ultimately develop chemotherapeutic drug resistance an...

In case of suspected early stage ovarian or fallopian tube cancer, omentectomy (at least infracolonic), appendectomy, multiple peritoneal biopsies, peritoneal cytology (grade C) and pelvic and para-a...

-Fang Cheng We aimed to determine prognostic factors of early stage (I/II) epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) including clinicopathologic and chemotherapeutic regimens. Four hundred and thirty-seven women who underwent primary staging surgery with adjuvant chemotherapy between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2010 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed from two medical centers. The prognostic factors were determined from multivariate survival analyses using Cox regression models. The majority of women were diagnosed with stage Ic (244/437, 55.8%). The histopathologic types were clear cell (37.5%), endometrioid (27....

This study determines FLOT1 expression in human ovarian tumors and examines its effect on OC   cell proliferation. FLOT1 protein expression was assessed in a tissue microarray by immunohistochemical staining. We found that 81.48% malignant and 50% borderline tumors were FLOT1 protein-positive, whereas benign tumors and normal ovarian tissues were negative. The staining was strongest in serous malignant tumor and transitional cell carcinoma and weakest in mucinous tumor. Differentially expressed FLOT1 in freshly isolated serous tumors was confirmed by Western blot and we then evaluated FLOT1 expression association...

Authors: Fukagawa D, Sugai T, Osakabe M, Suga Y, Nagasawa T, Itamochi H, Sugiyama T Abstract Recent studies have shown that cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contribute to invasive and metastatic abilities of ovarian cancer (OC) cells. In the present study, we attempted to identify the role of CAF- and EMT-related proteins in OCs, including serous carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, endometrioid carcinoma and clear cell carcinoma using an immunohistochemical approach. The following CAF-related markers were used: CD10, podoplanin, fibroblast activating protein (FAP), pla...

Abstract Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of all common gynaecological malignancies in women worldwide. Ovarian cancer comprises of>15 distinct tumor types and subtypes characterized by histopathological features, environmental and genetic risk factors, precursor lesions and molecular events during oncogenesis. Recent studies on gene signatures profiling of different subtypes of ovarian cancer have revealed significant genetic heterogeneity between and within each ovarian cancer histological subtype. Thus, an immense interest have shown towards a more personalized medicine for understanding the clinical and mo...
