(178) Psychosocial Predictors and Pain in Vascularized Composite Allotransplanation (VCA)

The capacity to successfully transplant organs has expanded steadily over recent decades. Despite abundant successes, many biopsychosocial challenges abound in the field of transplantation, including management of post-operative pain. We are conducting a mixed-methods study of patients and experts involved in upper extremity transplants; in general, the selection of upper extremity transplant recipients is currently a subjective process, typically using past experiences of routine surgical procedures or transplants from surgeons to determine if a person is a good candidate, without considering a patient's psychological resilience and capacity to self-manage and tolerate pain.
