Value of Training Physicians at Health Centers Pegged at $1.8 Billion in Public Program Savings

Research released today identifies how the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program could save $1.8 billion in Medicare and Medicaid spending, as residents trained in lower-spending areas average lower spending per patient once they begin practice. The THCGME program trains physicians and dentists at community health centers in rural and underserved areas, encouraging them to work in these areas and practice in primary care.
