Comparative analysis of conventional cold curettage versus endoscopic assisted coblation adenoidectomy.

CONCLUSION: Coblation adenoidectomy has significant advantages over conventional adenoidectomy in terms of reduced blood loss, no post-operative residual tissue and lower pain grade on day 1 after surgery. PMID: 30885281 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Treatment of systemic loxoscelism involves aggressive supportive care including appropriate wound management, blood transfusions, intravenous fluid replacement, and appropriate antibiotic coverage. It is unclear at this time if glucocorticoids or IVIg has any beneficial impact on the treatment of severe loxoscelism. PMID: 31015839 [PubMed]

Conclusion: Preoperative levels of serum leptin were higher in C-section patients with labor pain than in those without labor pain, and increased serum leptin levels were associated with decreased preoperative pain t hreshold and increased postoperative analgesic consumption in our study population. Postoperative analgesic requirements may vary among patients, and their requirements might be predicted using preoperative indicators. Serum levels of leptin might be one such indicator and this warrants further stud ies with larger sample sizes.

Incidence of nephrolithiasis has increased dramatically over the past 30  years, likely due to environmental changes such as dietary habits. Nephrolithiasis presents as acute flank or abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting. Hematuria is present in 90% of cases, but its absence does not rule out nephrolithiasis. Most cases can be managed expectantly as an outpatient wit h hydration, analgesia, and possibly medications to aide in passage. A metabolic evaluation may be indicated after a second episode of nephrolithiasis in adults or after a first episode in children or those with a family history of nephrolithiasis.

Publication date: Available online 25 April 2019Source: Brain, Behavior, and ImmunityAuthor(s): Zoe Hore, Franziska DenkAbstractIt is widely accepted that communication between the nervous and immune systems is involved in the development of chronic pain. At each level of the nervous system, immune cells have been reported to accompany and frequently mediate dysfunction of nociceptive circuitry; however the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. One way to speed up progress in this area is to increase interdisciplinary cross-talk. This review sets out to summarize what pain research has already learnt, or indeed might ...

The very large economic and social burdens of fracture-related complications make rapid fracture healing a major public health goal. The role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in treating osteoporosis is generally accepted, but the effect of PTH on fracture healing is controversial. This meta-analysis was designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of PTH in fracture healing. The EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched from the inception dates to April 26, 2018. The primary randomized clinical trials comparing PTH treatment for fracture healing with placebo or no treatment were identified...

Purpose of review Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is still a rare but potentially very morbid infection of the spine. In recent years, the incidence has risen sharply but the condition remains a medical conundrum wrought with unacceptably long diagnostic delays. The outcome depends on timely diagnosis and missed opportunities can be associated with catastrophic consequences. Management and outcomes have improved over the past decade. This review focuses on risk factors and markers that can aid in establishing the diagnosis, the radiological characteristics of SEA on MRI and their clinical implications, as well as the impor...
