One or more functional somatic syndromes? Comparison of the health status of fibromyalgia and electro-hypersensitive people.

CONCLUSION: The health status of fibromyalgia persons is overall worse than the health status of electro-hypersensitive individuals in this small sample. Despite the overlap in symptoms and a similar impact on daily functioning, this exploratory study suggests that heterogeneous mechanisms of "somatization" may be at stake in functional somatic syndromes. This study explored the role of central sensitization (CS) pain in patients with various rheumatic diseases using the CS inventory (CSI).MethodsA total of 193 patients of mean age 50.72  ± 9.65 years were included; they were divided into four different groups in terms of their rheumatic diseases. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthropathy (SpA), osteoarthritis (OA), and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) were evaluated in tertiary care rheumatology/pain medicine se ttings. Disease duration and activity, the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, the Disease Activity Score-2...

ConclusionsPatients with severe asthma have numerous extra ‐pulmonary symptoms similar in type and pattern to the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The similarity of the symptom pattern between asthma and fibromyalgia increases as the number of extra‐pulmonary symptoms increases as predicted by network theory and previously shown to be the case with other funct ional disorders. These findings support the hypothesis that functional disorders and extra‐pulmonary asthma symptoms have a common complexity or network aetiology. Evidence based behavioural interventions for fibromyalgia may be helpful for patients with severe a...

This study assessed associations between opioid use/dosage and polysomnographically assessed sleep in patients with fibromyalgia and insomnia (FMI) and examined moderating effects of age and pain. Participants (N = 193, Mage = 51.7, SD = 11.8, range = 18-77) with FMI completed ambulatory polysomnography and 14 daily diaries. Multiple regression determined whether commonly prescribed oral opioid use or dosage (among users) independently predicted or interacted with age/pain intensity to predict sleep, controlling for sleep medication use and apnea hypopnea index. Opioid use predicted greater %stage 2 and lower %slow-wave sl...
