Monopolar hemostatic forceps with soft coagulation: earning a place in the endoscopic hemostasis repertoire for peptic ulcer bleeding

Although the epidemiology of acute upper GI bleeding (UGIB) has been changing, UGIB is still a common cause of hospital admissions worldwide, with peptic ulcers accounting for at least 30% of the UGIB episodes in large database studies.1-3 International consensus on the management of nonvariceal UGIB recommends the following: prompt assessment and risk stratification of patients, adequate resuscitation with judicious use of blood transfusion, pre-endoscopic acid suppression with proton pump inhibitors to reduce need for endoscopic therapy, early endoscopy within 24 hours of admission, and acid suppression with proton pump inhibitor intravenous bolus followed by infusion after successful endoscopic therapy to reduce the risk of recurrent bleeding.
