Con: Hyperoxia Should Not Be Used Routinely in the Management of Cardiopulmonary Bypass

STANDARD ANESTHESIA PRACTICE has traditionally included administering 100% oxygen before both induction and emergence. Historically, it was not uncommon to deliver 100% oxygen throughout a case out of fear of hypoxemia. In fact, it was once routine practice for the surgeon to announce “the blood is red” immediately after incision. With the standard use of pulse oximetry and oxygen concentration monitoring in modern-day operating rooms, it would be atypical to encounter delivery of 100% oxygen throughout an entire anesthetic just in case of a catastrophic patient event or equi pment failure.
