Efficient genome engineering of Toxoplasma gondii using the TALEN technique

Aromatic amino acid hydroxylase 2 (AAH2) is a bradyzoite-specific upregulated protein that may alter host behaviour by altering the host dopaminergic pathway. To better understand the role of the parasite ’s AA...

Authors: Choi YJ, Görg M, Shin HD, Thines M Abstract Over the past 15 years, downy mildew became the most destructive foliar disease in cultivated Impatiens species (Balsaminaceae) worldwide. A previous study had revealed that the causal agent was not Plasmopara obducens (Oomycota, Peronosporales) but Plasmopara destructor on Impatiens walleriana, and Plasmopara velutina on Impatiens balsamina. This hints to a relatively high degree of specialization of Plasmopara on Balsaminaceae. Therefore, it was the aim of the present study to perform multigene phylogenetic analysis and detailed morphological investigation...

Abstract Vaccination was developed by Edward Jenner in 1796. Since then, vaccination and vaccine development research has been a hotspot of research in the scientific community. Various ways of vaccine development are successfully employed in mass production of vaccines. One of the most successful ways to generate vaccines is the method of virulence attenuation in pathogens. The attenuated strains of viruses, bacteria, and parasites are used as vaccines which elicit robust immune response and confers protection against virulent pathogens. This chapter brings together the most common and efficient ways of generatin...

Liver fluke proteins, including excretory-secretory products (ESPs) and tegument proteins, are critical for the pathogenesis, nutrient metabolism, etiology and immune response of liver cancer. To understand the functions of various proteins in Clonorchis sinensis physiology and human clonorchiasis, the ESPs and tegument proteins of C. sinensis were identified. Supernatants containing ESPs from adult C. sinensis after culture for 6 h were harvested and concentrated. The tegument was detached using a freeze/thaw method and successively extracted using various extraction buffers. The outer surface proteins of C. sinensis were...

Schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni trematode worm, affects more than 1.5 million people in Brazil. The current treatment consists in the administration of Praziquantel, the only medicine used for treatment for more than 40 years. Some of the limitations of this drug consist in its inactivity against schistosomula and parasite eggs, the appearance of resistant strains and non-prevention against reinfection. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of immunization with recombinant functional enzymes of the purine salvage pathway of S. mansoni, Nucleoside Diphosphate Kinase (NDPK) and Adenylosu...

Sensors, Vol. 20, Pages 5454: Standing Wave Binding of Hemispherical Resonator Containing First–Third Harmonics of Mass Imperfection under Linear Vibration Excitation Sensors doi: 10.3390/s20195454 Authors: Yan Huo Shunqing Ren Zhennan Wei Guoxing Yi Due to complicated processing technology, the mass distribution of a hemispherical resonator made of fused silica is not uniform, which can affect the azimuth of the standing wave of a resonator under the linear vibration excitation. Therefore, the analysis of standing wave evolution of a resonator with mass imperfection under linear vibration excitation is...

We report the case of a patient with abdominal pain, ascites and marked eosinophilia. The diagnostic investigation excluded frequent causes of eosinophilia. The diagnosis of strongyloidiasis was confirmed by immunoenzymatic positivity of the antibody to Strongyloides stercoralis. Since the patient lived in a region where several cases of strongyloidiasis were diagnosed in the past, and given the absence of previous trips abroad, this is the first case identified in recent decades of autochthonous strongyloidiasis in Portugal. The authors point out the possibility of chronic infection acquired in regions previously consider...
