Ethnic prevalence of anemia and predictors of anemia among chronic kidney disease patients at a tertiary hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Conclusion: Almost half of the CKD participants were anemic, and the odds of anemia did not increase linearly with increasing severity of CKD. There was a marked ethnic disparity in anemia prevalence. Our study highlights the need for risk-based management of anemia among CKD patients. PMID: 30858723 [PubMed]

This article aims to classify the severity grading assessments for both insulin resistance (IR) syndrome and status of pancreatic beta (β) islet cells’ function using the homeostasis model assessment method (that is; homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance [HOMA-IR] and homeostasis model assessment-pancreatic beta (β) islet cells’ function [HOMA-B] indices) with the focus of disseminating this information rapidly for clinical use by physicians in their patients with dysfunctional regulation of glucose metabolism. It will also assist clinicians to prevent and screen for these individuals who ar...

In this study, the core-shell polydopamine-coated magnetic nanomaterials were synthesized with one-step approach and applied as magnetic solid phase extraction adsorbents combined with LC-MS/MS for quantification of the diabetes drug glimepiride in beagle dog plasma. The Fe3O4@PDA nanomaterials have strong magnetic response, good dispersibility in aqueous solution, and numerous binding sites for π–π interaction and hydrogen bonding with glimepiride. Based on these merits, glimepiride could be quickly extracted and separated from plasma within 10min. The established method has good linearity (1-2000ng•mL-1)...

Ved, Darshan ShankarAbstractIndia's medical heritage across its two streams of experiential knowledge viz. the classical (codified) and folk (oral) reveals an incredible range and depth of knowledge of medicinal plants. In the classical stream of Ayurveda, across the period from 1500 BCE to 1900 CE, there is information of more than 12,000 distinct Sanskrit plant names with overlaps across texts. This information is captured in more than 200 texts viz. 6 samhitas, 57 ...

Conclusions: Although the results of the study are encouraging, poor knowledge of risk factors and of diagnosis of leptospirosis can significantly affect the quality of patient care. This calls for multifaceted interventions to improve the medical curriculum. PMID: 32058828 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preetham KumarAbstractEqual channel angular extrusion/pressing (ECAE/P) is an effectual technique to raise the mechanical, physical properties and resistance to wear of the materials. In this research, Al-5Zn-2Mg alloy material was ECAPed in route BC at lowest temperature. Hardness of the test material was increased after ECAE/P due to microstructure refinement. To demonstrate the wear characteristics of the Al-5Zn-2Mg alloy material after ECAE/P, wear tests (in dry sliding condition) were c...

Authors: Augstburger E, Héron E, Abanou A, Habas C, Baudouin C, Labbe A Abstract Ischemic optic neuropathies are among the leading causes of severe visual acuity loss in people over 50 years of age. They constitute a set of various entities that are clinically, etiologically and therapeutically different. Anatomically, it is necessary to distinguish anterior and posterior forms. From an etiological point of view, the diagnosis of the arteritic form due to giant cell arteritis requires emergent management to prevent blindness and even death in the absence of prompt corticosteroid treatment. When this diagnosi...
