Gender Influences Gait Asymmetry following Bicruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty

This study aimed to determine if 3D gait kinematics, including 3D knee translations and rotations, differed in men and women following bicruciate-retaining (BCR) TKA. Twenty-nine well-functioning unilateral BCR TKA patients (14 males and 15 females) underwent evaluation of both knees during level walking on a treadmill at a self-selected speed using a dual fluoroscopic imaging system. Interlimb comparisons of in vivo 6 degree-of-freedom kinematics were compared between male and female patients. Differences of pre- and postoperative Knee Society scores (KSSs) were compared between the groups. Both groups were matched regarding age and body mass index. Both male and female patients demonstrated improvement in their postoperative KSSs. Statistically significant differences were observed with respect to spatiotemporal anterior–posterior interlimb translations (p

Publication date: 23 May 2019Source: Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Volume 236Author(s): Cheryl LansAbstractEthnopharmacological relevanceThere are insufficient safe and effective treatments for chronic pain in pets. In cases such as osteoarthritis there is no commercially available cure and veterinarians use NSAIDs to manage pain. Pet owners may have to plan for a lifetime of plant-based treatment for the conditions that lead to chronic pain in pets. Phytopharmacotherapies have the advantage of being less toxic, cheap or free, readily available, are more likely to be safe for long-term use and have the potential to reset t...

This study aims to update the prior study results to include only the high concentration non-avian high molecular weight hyaluronan (HMW-HA) injectables using recent years data. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study utilizing IBM Marketscan Commercial data from 2008 to 2015. METHODS: Commercially insured patients between 18 and 64 years of age who received high concentration non-avian HMW-HA (Orthovisc®) between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2015 were identified. Utilization of three prescription pharmacotherapies commonly used in the treatment for knee OA: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NS...

Authors: Rashid RH, Zubairi AJ, Umer M, Hashmi PM, Lakdawala RH Abstract To evaluate the outcome of one stage long stem total knee arthroplasty (TKA) of patients with stress fracture of the proximal tibia of the knee joint. Record of 15 patients, 14 females and one male who underwent one stage long stem TKAfrom the year January 2008 till December 2014 were reviewed retrospectively. Outcome variable was fracture healing which was seen clinically (pain free and postop ambulation) as well as radiologically (union of three out of four cortices). Mean age of the patients were 65 years and the mean BMI was 31. Of the 15 ...

Pinnacle® modular metal-on-metal articulation in primary total hip arthroplasty: mid-term results of 195 cases. Acta Orthop Belg. 2018 Dec;84(4):407-414 Authors: Colen S, Kuiper JW, Thys P, De Schuyffeleer S, Mulier M Abstract Studies concerning Pinnacle® modular metal-on- metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) show better results than for most other MoM THAs. The goal of this study was to report on the revision rate, clinical outcome and metal ion levels regarding this specific prosthesis. Retrospectively selected patients were evaluated clinically, and Visual Analogue Score for pain (VAS), ...

(Wiley) Osteoarthritis (OA) has traditionally been viewed as a highly prevalent but milder condition when compared with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and some may believe that it is part of a normal aging process requiring acceptance, not treatment. A new study in Arthritis&Rheumatology indicates that OA and RA have similar impacts or burdens on patients when they first visit rheumatologists, however.

In treatment of isolated medial unicondylar osteoarthritis of the knee, it is possible to choose between medial unicondylar knee arthroplasty (mUKA), or a total knee prosthesis (TKA). The demand for a blinded ...

ConclusionMDHAQ/RAPID3 scores are similar in OA or RA at initial visit, but higher in OA 6 months later, reflecting superior RA treatments. The same MDHAQ/RAPID3 allows comparisons of disease burdens in different diseases. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Authors: Bai F, Ma Y, Guo H, Li Y, Xu F, Zhang M, Dong H, Deng J, Xiong L Abstract The concept of "acupoint sensitization" refers to the functional status of acupoint switches from silent to active under pathological conditions. In clinic, acupoint sensitization provides important guidance for acupoints selection in different diseases. However, the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. We generated a model of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) into the left knee of rats. The paw withdrawal mechanical threshold (PWMT) and the total number of m...
