NEMA Releases Standards on Computed Tomography Dose Check

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association has published NEMA XR 25-2019 Computed Tomography Dose Check. The updated standards describe equipment feature for CT scanners for producing dose-related notification and alert messages for informing operators prior to scanning. It provides a pathway for manufacturers to start implementing‘dose alert’ feature. This story is related to the following:Health, Medical,&Dental Supplies and EquipmentSearch for suppliers of:Trade Associations

Conclusion: Use of CT scans to triage an appropriate pleural biopsy method is associated with high diagnostic success. We recommend that the proposed diagnostic workup in this study may be used as a diagnostic algorithm for pleural diseases that require a histopathologic analysis. Determination of risk factors predicting malignant disease in patients where fibrinous pleuritis is reported after MT would be useful for clinical practice.

Conclusions: With a 15% incidence of occult posterior malleolar fractures, a CT scan or multiple orthogonal views can be helpful to avoid missed fractures. Given the wide variability of fracture angle, a single external rotation view is unlikely to prevent all missed fractures on initial radiographic interpretations. Level of Evidence: Level III, retrospective cohort study.

Out of the 22,240 women in the United States who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year, only about 47 percent survive longer than five years. But Dr. Beth Karlan, the newly appointed director of cancer population genetics atUCLA ’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, is hopeful that her research will not only help women get diagnosed with ovarian cancer at an earlier stage, but also identify the women who are most at-risk so they can intervene before the cancer even develops. In this interview, Karlan, who is also the vice chair of women ’s health research in the obstetrics and gynecology department in th...

Scherbakova, Vadim V. Koroev, Oleg Sh. KesaevAbstractA patient with extensive fibro-cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) underwent bilateral VATS thoracoplasty. An examination four years post-surgery revealed that the patient was in a satisfactory condition and able-bodied.We performed surgery according to our proposed VATS thoracoplasty technique. The objective of this study was to determine computed tomography screening uptake across ten states using 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data.MethodsIn fall 2018, a cross-sectional analysis was performed on survey data from 4,374 low-dose computed tomography–eligible participants, as determined by Task Force recommendations. Weighted percentages were calculated to assess computed tomography screening utilization overall and by state, sociodemographic, and clinical characteristics; Wald chi-squared tests evaluated group differences.ResultsWithin the study sample, 14.4% of eligible individuals h...

DR QUAN-YANG DUH (San Francisco, CA): About half of the patients with primary aldosteronism are curable by adrenalectomy. The other half have bilateral disease and are treated medically. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the medical vs surgical primary aldosteronism because aldosteronomas tend to be small, and incidental nonfunctioning adenomas can be found in 1% of patients at age 30 years and 7% at age 70 years. The potential inaccuracy of CT scan is a reason why the adrenal vein sampling is used.

(Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging) Research presented at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging's 2019 Annual Meeting shows that molecular imaging with 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can evaluate tuberculosis at the molecular level, effectively identifying diseased areas and guiding treatment for patients.

(Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging) Research presented at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging's 2019 Annual Meeting draws a strong link between severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and impaired coronary flow reserve, which is an early sign of the heart disease atherosclerosis. Using 13N-ammonia positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), researchers were able to noninvasively evaluate coronary microvascular function in OSA patients and use their findings to predict cardiovascular disease risk.

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using a 320-detector CT scanner with a 16 cm wide-detector combined with iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithm to further reduce radiation dose when scanning the PS. METHODS: A total of 90 children who underwent CT of the PS were randomly allocated into three groups namely, (1) the experimental group using low-dose wide-detector scan (n = 30, 9±4 years); (2) low-dose helical group (n = 30, 9±4 years); and (3) pediatric conventional group (n = 30, 8±4 years). Statistical software SPSS 19.0 was used for one-way ANOVA analysis of the general data (ag...

ConclusionBoth this systematic literature review, the largest to date, and our single- center experience demonstrate a lower than previously reported68Ga-SSTR PET/CT sensitivity for ECS, especially in occult lesions. We suggest that the data on68Ga-SSTR PET/CT in ECS is subject to publication bias, and false-negatives are likely underreported; it ’s diagnostic value for ECS needs further study.
