We appreciate the comments of Elgin et  al. Their recitation and agreement with a number of the limitations we had outlined, as well as our admonition of caution regarding translation of our results to contemporary cohorts and practice, is beneficial; it is important that such things be considered with any scientific report. Notably, fr om our perspective, the proposal that our dichotomization of subjects into those with clinically evident patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and those without PDAs threatens long-term research is a bit hyperbolic and, although flattering, likely gives too much credit to our work's potential to change the landscape of the field.
