Approximately 2 million fractures related to osteoporosis occurred in the United States in 2005, and this number is expected to increase to 3 million by 2025 due to the aging population.1 Factures negatively affect the functional status of patients, resulting in approximately 300,000 hospitalizations annually and, in some cases, may lead to death.1 Fracture usually results from weakened bone mass under a stress, such as a fall. Risk factors include low bone mass, older age, history of falls, female sex, smoking, and use of glucocorticoids or other medications that may affect risk.
