The Endoscopic Hepatologist

The role of advanced endoscopic techniques, such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), continues to evolve in the diagnosis and management of a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. ERCP has traditionally been a “plumbers” tool, a minimally invasive intervention to manage obstruction and leaks of the pancreaticobiliary tree, all with the assistance of 2-dimensional black-and-white fluoroscopic images. EUS, in its infancy, was used as a tool to identify and stage GI malignancies and eventually perform fi ne-needle aspirates of tumors.
