Exfoliative Esophagitis Induced By Sunitinib

An 86-year-old man who had been treated with sunitinib for renal cell carcinoma vomited blood 70 days after beginning sunitinib therapy. On admission, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) showed widespread exfoliation of the esophageal epithelium and hematoma (Figure  1A, B), and computed tomography showed high-density substance filling in the esophagus (Figure 2). These findings were limited in the middle to lower portion of the esophagus. We discontinued sunitinib and began injection of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).
