ConclusionsSIGSW are associated with a high rate of post injury infection, 35%, despite 88% of these cases receiving prophylactic antibiotics. This warrants the use of prophylactic antibiotics in this patient population. Given the microbial patterns this prophylactic antibiotic course should include empiric coverage for gram negative and anaerobic bacteria.
