Medtronic launches Grafton DBM in Japan

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that it launched its Grafton demineralized bone matrix bone grafting product in Japan. The Fridley, Minn.-based company touted the Grafton DBM as the first and only demineralized bone matrix product available in Japan, having won clearance from the country’s PMDA last August. The newly launched Grafton DBM is a bone graft extender, bone graft substitute and bone void filler intended for use in bony voids or gaps in the skeletal system. The company added that the Grafton DBM has consistently high osteoconductivity scores and that it is the “most utilized and scientifically-studied DBM on the market.” “Our unmatched combination of biologic therapies, services and expertise help surgeons meet the needs of each unique patient. Grafton is an important option within our comprehensive, market-leading biologics portfolio, and we’re excited that surgeons in Japan now have access to this clinically-proven osteoinductive bone graft product,” spine division prez Jacob Paul said in a prepared statement. Medtronic said that the Grafton DBM is comprised of multiple forms, and that it is launching the Grafton Putty, Grafton Matrix and Grafton Strip in Japan. Yesterday, Medtronic said that it won 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its Accurian radiofrequency nerve ablation device for treating chronic pain. ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first report of spondylodiscitis caused byAspergillus terreus after an abdominal penetrating injury. The histological finding of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis and the radiological findings strongly suggested direct inoculation ofAspergillus terreus.

Conclusion The expression of the components of the PTN-MK-RPTPβ/ζ axis in immune cells and in inflammatory diseases suggests important roles for this axis in inflammation. Pleiotrophin has been recently identified as a limiting factor of metainflammation, a chronic pathological state that contributes to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Pleiotrophin also seems to potentiate acute neuroinflammation independently of the inflammatory stimulus while MK seems to play different -even opposite- roles in acute neuroinflammation depending on the stimulus. Which are the functions of MK and PTN in chronic neuroinfla...

CONCLUSIONS Anterior SIJ arthrodesis was effective in most patients with severe SIJ pain resistant to conservative therapy. This approach has the advantage of direct curettage and bone graft into the wide area of the SIJ, which result in good bone union. In particular, the authors' current pararectal approach could decrease the potential risk of lateral cutaneous injury. PMID: 29932359 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study has confirmed the biocompatibility, safety, efficacy and bone healing characteristics of the HA-TCP collagen (with or without 45S5 bioactive glass) composites. The results show that the 3 test groups had equivalent long-term fusion performance and outcome at 12 weeks. However, the presence of 45S5 bioactive glass seemed to accelerate the fusion process as evidenced by the higher fusion rates at 4 and 8 weeks for the HA-TCP-collagen composite containing bioactive glass particles. The results also demonstrate that the HA-TCP-45S5 bioactive glass-collagen composite used as an extender closely mirrors the healing ch...

Authors: Stover MD, Edelstein AI, Matta JM Abstract Chronic anterior pelvic ring instability can cause pain and disability. Pain typically is localized to the suprapubic area or inner thigh; often is associated with lower back or buttock pain; and may be exacerbated by activity, direct impact, or pelvic ring compression. Known etiologies of chronic anterior pelvic ring instability include pregnancy, parturition, trauma, insufficiency fractures, athletics, prior surgery, and osteitis pubis. Diagnosis often is delayed. Physical examination may reveal an antalgic or waddling gait, tenderness over the pubic bones or sy...

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by ossification of the ligaments of the spinal column, annulus fibrosis, endplates, and apophyseal joints, resulting in the formation of a “bamboo spine” [1–3]. Ankylosis of the spine also causes vertebral osteoporosis and biomechanical alterations [4,5]. Spinal pseudarthrosis is a well-known complication in AS patients [3,6]. This pseudarthrosis often progresses to destructive lesions of the intervertebral disc and vertebral bod y at the site of pseudarthrosis [6,7], known as Andersson lesions (ALs) [3]; ALs lead to persistent b...

My name is Alexandra Albin (msaxolotl on Twitter) and I have an orthopedic condition called osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis (AVN). AVN is a painful and debilitating bone disease that typically affects long bones, is caused by a loss of blood supply to the bone, and can lead to bone degeneration and the collapse of joint surfaces. AVN can happen for many reasons. In my case it was the result of medications — steroids —given for a misdiagnosed condition of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1994. That was my third strange neurological episode over several years of what was suspected to be MS, but never confirmed. One...
