Introduction: Kidney Safety Science

The three tenets of kidney safety science are as follows: (1) to predict compounds that are potentially toxic to the human kidney before they reach human beings; (2) to show kidney damage can be monitored and reversed for therapeutic candidates with a low therapeutic index for kidney safety; and (3) to counteract kidney damage by developing safe and effective targeted therapeutics (Fig. 1).
