The objective of this study was to assess the effects of high-dose cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) on breast tumour proliferation and apoptosis.MethodsWe conducted a prospective, randomized, phase 2, double-blinded pre-surgical window of opportunity trial. Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were randomized to receive 40,000  IU of vitamin D3 per day or placebo for 2 to 6 weeks prior to breast surgery. The primary outcome was the relative change in proliferation (Ki67) and apoptosis (cleaved caspase 3 apoptotic assay [CC3]) in primary breast cancer cells pre and post treatment.ResultsOf 83 patients randomized, 80 comp...

CONCLUSION: Because of social, medical or psychological constraints, the rate of outpatient breast surgery remains in our practice, stable in recent years at 56%. Some ways of improvement can be envisaged, but it is likely that this rate will only increase in a very gradual manner in the years to come. PMID: 31627904 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsBreast conservation may be considered a safe alternative in the surgical treatment of MBC. Future research should focus on better standardization of local therapy for MBC and improved reporting of outcomes.

Authors: Novikov SN, Chernaya AV, Krzhivitsky PI, Kanaev SV, Krivorotko PV, Artemyeva AS, Popova NS Abstract OBJECTIVE: To compare diagnostic accuracy of scintimammography (SMG) and digital mammography (DS) in the diagnosis of multicentric breast cancer. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Three hundred and sixty seven women with histologically confirmed breast cancer were included in this analysis. All patients were candidates for conservative breast surgery and had cT1-3N0-1 stage of disease. Scintimammography was performed in prone position 5-10min after intravenous injection of 740MBq of technetium-99m-methoxy-isobtyl-is...

Authors: Cassai A, Bonanno C, Sandei L, Finozzi F, Carron M, Marchet A Abstract Background: Breast cancer is complicated by a high incidence of chronic postoperative pain (25%-60%). Regional anesthesia might play an important role in lowering the incidence of chronic pain; however it is not known if the pectoral nerve block (PECS block), which is commonly used for breast surgery, is able to prevent this complication. Our main objective was therefore to detect any association between the PECS block and chronic pain at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months in patients undergoing breast surgery. Methods: We conducted a prospecti...

The aims of this study were to explore the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and c-myc protein in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and its clinical prognostic significance, and to establish a prediction model for postoperative survival of TNBC based on nomogram. A total of 87 patients with TNBC at the Department of Breast Surgery, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2012 to December 2015 were enrolled in this study. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect the expression of HIF-1α and c-myc protein in breast cancer tissues. Cox regression analyses w...

AbstractBackgroundLocal tumor destruction with cryoablation (cryo) induces inflammation and releases antigens that can activate tumor-specific immune responses. Pre-clinically, cryo with checkpoint inhibition augmented tumor-specific immune responses and prevented recurrence. Clinically, we established that peri-operative (peri-op) cryo with ipilimumab (ipi) +/- nivolumab (nivo) was not only safe in patients (pts) with operable, early stage breast cancer (ESBC) but also generated robust intra-tumoral and systemic immune responses. In this randomized phase 2 study, we evaluate the disease specific impact of peri-op ipi/nivo...

ConclusionsThe accuracy of preoperative CE-MRI to predict pCR after NACT for EBC is moderate but in luminal tumors did not accurately predict pCR. However, rCR was strongly associated with favorable RFS, especially in HER2 positive and triple negative breast cancer tumors.Legal entity responsible for the studyThe authors.FundingHas not received any funding.DisclosureAll authors have declared no conflicts of interest.

Background Not all women undergo breast reconstruction despite its vital role in the recovery process. Previous studies have reported that women who are ethnically diverse and of lower socioeconomic status are less likely to undergo breast reconstruction, but the reasons remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the demographic characteristics of our patient population and their primary reason for not undergoing breast reconstruction. Methods An institutional review board-approved, single-institution study was designed to evaluate all female breast cancer patients of all stages who underwent mastectomy ...

Breast reconstruction after nipple sparing mastectomy (NSM) plays, nowadays, a fundamental role in breast cancer management. There is no consensus on the best implant-based reconstruction technique, considering 2 stages (expander-prosthesis) or direct-to-implant (DTI). A retrospective review of consecutive adult female patients who underwent NSM with breast reconstruction over a 3-year period (January 2013 to December 2015) was performed. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the type of reconstruction: expander/prosthesis (group A) and DTI (group B). Anamnestic data were collected. Number and type of procedures...
