Cost-Effectiveness Comparison of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines in Turkish Children

ConclusionsAny difference in price between PHiD-CV and PCV13 is expected to be the key driver of vaccine choice for preventing childhood pneumococcal disease in Turkey. At price parity, PHiD-CV use is likely to be a dominant strategy over the use of PCV13.

Authors: Turkkahraman D, Karatas Torun N, Randa NC Abstract Loss-of-function mutations in immunoglobulin superfamily, member 1 (IGSF1) gene cause X-linked central hypothyroidism, and therefore its mutation affects mainly males. Central hypothyroidism in males is the hallmark of the disorder, however some patients additionally present with hypoprolactinemia, transient and partial growth hormone deficiency, early/normal timing of testicular enlargement but delayed testosterone rise in puberty, and adult macroorchidism. Here, we report a boy with congenital central hypothyroidism caused by a novel variant in IGSF1 gen...

Authors: Chen GF, Cheng YR, Ye L, Wang MW, Zhou MY, Zhang F, Chen J, Feng ZH Abstract OBJECTIVE: The World Health Organization reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause detected on December 31, 2019 in China. Unfortunately, a 34-year-old Italian nurse has committed suicide after testing positive for coronavirus. It was the second case of suicide by a nurse in an Italian hospital and occurred only a few days after the first suicide. These consecutive suicides have aroused concern, and it is necessary to investigate the psychological issues of the medical staff in Italy regarding the COVID-19. PMI...

Authors: Hasegawa Y, Arinuma Y, Tanaka S, Tono T, Tanaka T, Muramatsu T, Kondo J, Matsueda Y, Hoshiyama T, Wada T, Takayama Y, Yamaoka K Abstract A 40-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus taking consecutive oral corticosteroids developed a high-grade fever and disorder of consciousness following acute rhinitis. Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) was found and isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid by culture, leading to a diagnosis of meningitis. The prevalence of H. influenzae type b (Hib) infections has decreased due to routine immunization. As a result, the prevalence of invasive non-Hib, inc...

In conclusion, while the two assays present equivalent data for assessing the effectiveness of the bivalent and quadrivalent vaccines, PGMY-CHUV is more suitable for evaluating the impact of the current 9-valent vaccine because of its superior detection of HPV52 in co-infection cases. CONCLUSION: Non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi), mostly derived from pneumonia and AOM, were genetically diverse, in contrast to the predominance of H. influenzae type b (Hib) among meningitis cases. The associations between certain STs and β-lactam resistance among NTHi were confirmed. PMID: 29595417 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: K L Ç H, Akyol S, Parkan ÕM, Dinç G, Sav H, Aydemir G Abstract Haemophilus influenzae can cause invasive and severe infections in both adults and children such as otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia, meningitis and bacteremia. The emerging antibiotic resistance in recent years against ampicillin and several other antibiotics among strains of H. influenzae gives cause for serious concern. Here, we investigate ß-lactamase (BL) activity in clinical isolates of H. influenzae, profile their resistance to antibiotics, and characterize the clonal relationship of the isolates. Antibiotic ...
