A letter to the editor in the August 14 New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at the University of Michigan proudly reported on the results of their effort, called the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), to reduce the volume of opioids prescribed for postoperative pain. The Collaborative developed a set of guidelines for its participating prescribers. As a result, they found that from January 2017 through May 2018, the mean number of pills prescribed for postoperative pain decreased from 26 (+/-2) pills pre-guideline to 18 (+/ – 3) pills post-guideline. Patient pill consumption also dec...
Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant that induces arousal, a positive mood, cardiac stimulation, and an acute improvement in cognitive domains. Its illicit exploitation is rapidly growing in North America. Typically, extended use of the drug induces organ damage via vasoconstriction and subsequent ischemia. This case specifically discusses hepatic and pancreatic pathology resulting from methamphetamine overdose alongside an unusual discovery of globally necrotic von Meyenburg complexes.
In the wake of dramatic increases, and demographic shifts, in the misuse of heroin and prescription opioids, drug addiction and accidental overdose have been increasingly framed as public health, not criminal justice, matters in the United States. In turn,...
The opioid epidemic in the United States has resulted in over 42,000 U.S. opioid overdose fatalities in 2016 alone. In New York City (NYC) opioid overdoses have reached a record high, increasing from 13.6 overdose deaths/100,000 to 19.9/100,000 from 2015 to 2016. Supervised injection facilities (SIFs) provide a hygienic, safe environment in which pre-obtained drug s can be consumed under clinical supervision to quickly reverse opioid overdoses. While SIFs have been implemented worldwide, none have been implemented to date in the United States.
How is the illicit flow of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids impacting communities across the United States? A recent RAND report examined mortality and seizure data at the state level across several drug classes to better understand the evolution and concentration of overdose fatalities in the United States.
ConclusionsAmong midlife women Veterans with chronic pain, evidence of menopausal symptoms was associated with potentially risky long-term opioid prescription patterns, independent of known risk factors.

In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency . Opioid overdose deaths have quadrupled in certain states over the past twenty years, and deaths are expected to rise by 147% from 2015 to 2025 . On March 26, 2019, Purdue Pharma LP paid Oklahoma $270 million in a settlement for a claim of aggressive marketing oxycodone, and this lawsuit is probably the first of more than 1600 . In response to the opioid epidemic, the Executive Office of the United States in March 19, 2018 proposed to cut nationwide opioid prescriptions by one-third within three years .
In under six years, fatal overdoses from synthetic opioids have increased tenfold while remaining concentrated in certain states. The number of heroin or cocaine overdoses that involve synthetic opioids has also risen. These changes could have broad effects on public health and public safety.
