Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (Niemann-Pick disease type B) as an inflammatory disease
In this report, early graft dysfunction was diagnosed at day 3 and the patient was empirically treated with antibiotics and high dose corticosteroid therapy. Death occurred on the 29th post-operative day and an autopsy revealed abundance of foamy macrophages in lung tissue consistent with ASMD cells.
