To date, the molecular mechanisms that underlie residual feed intake (RFI) in pigs are unknown. Results from different genome-wide association studies and gene expression analyses are not always consistent. Th...

CONCLUSIONS: ML algorithms and RNA-Seq expression data were found to provide good performance for classifying pigs into high or low RFI groups. Classification was better with gene expression data from liver than from duodenum. Genes associated with FE in liver and duodenum tissue that can be used as predictive biomarkers for this trait were identified. PMID: 30866799 [PubMed - in process]

Passive dynamics in snakes’ slithering motion Shovel-nosed snake moves through force-sensitive rubber pegs. Image courtesy of Allison Carter (Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta). Limbless vertebrates such as snakes slither across sandy surfaces by pressing the curves of their sinuous trunks against transient piles of sand to propel themselves forward. However,...

AbstractThe red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) escaped its natural enemies when it was introduced into North America in the 1930s from South America. US efforts have focused on discovery of natural enemies, like viruses, to provide sustainable control of the ant. Nine new virus genomes were sequenced from the invasive fire antSolenopsis invicta using metagenomic RNA sequencing. The virus genomes were verified by Sanger sequencing and random amplification of cDNA ends reactions. In addition to the nine new virus genomes, the previously described Solenopsis viruses were also detected, including Solenopsis invicta vir...

Abstract Sacran, a new polysaccharide isolated from cyanobacterium Aphanothece sacrum (Sur.) Okada, is known to have potential as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, various types of dermatitis, skin wound, hemorrhoids and corneal epithelium disorder. In the present studies, the effects of sacran on skin injury and skin pain induced by stratum corneum tape-stripping and gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and hydrochloride/ethanol (HCl/EtOH) in mice were investigated. Sacran solution 0.05% (w/v) showed greater reductio...

BEAUREGARD, Ala. (AP) — Rescue crews using dogs and drones searched for victims amid splintered lumber and twisted metal Monday after the deadliest U.S. tornado in nearly six years ripped through a rural Alabama community. At least 23 people were killed, some of them children. Dozens were missing in Lee County nearly a day after the twister struck, according to the sheriff, who said that crews had combed the hardest-hit areas but that other places had yet to be searched. The winds Sunday afternoon obliterated numerous homes, leaving huge, jumbled piles of wood and household belongings. Some homes were reduced to conc...
