New therapy for aggressive blood cancer discovered

(University of Veterinary Medicine -- Vienna) Researchers at Vetmeduni Vienna and Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Cancer Research have identified a new therapeutic strategy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. They found that the activity of the mutated oncogenic protein C/EBPα is dependent on MLL1 histone methyltransferase complex. Laboratory tests showed that functional perturbation of MLL1 complex led to death of AML cells with C/EBPα mutations. Inhibitor treatment released the differentiation block of cancer cells and restored normal maturation of blood cells.
