Investigating Racial Disparities in Bariatric Surgery Referrals

The prevalence of obesity among adults in the United States between 2011-2014 was approximately 36.5%.(1) Hispanic individuals and African-Americans were disproportionately affected with 42.5% and 48.1% meeting criteria for obesity, respectively. African-American women had the highest obesity rates among groups 56.9%, compared to 45.7% and 35.5% of Hispanic and Caucasian women. More recently, Hales and colleagues noted the prevalence of obesity among adults as of 2015-2016 had increased to 38.6%.
