Lyme disease is now in all 50 states of America

The chronic tick-borne illness has long been rampant across the North East, which has historically accounted for 95 percent of cases. But a new report shows a 194% rise in cases in California.

Smith, Nicole NemethAbstractCervid babesiosis, caused by the protozoan hemoparasite Babesia odocoilei and transmitted by the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis, is an emerging disease of Canadian cervids. This pathogen has not yet been described in humans. Data are lacking on the role of migratory birds in the adventitious spread of Ba. odocoilei-infected ticks, as well as on the infection status of I. scapularis in ...

Garro, for Pedi Lyme NetAbstractOf 1,770 children undergoing emergency department evaluation for Lyme disease, 362 (20.5%) children had Lyme disease. Of those with an available tick bite history, only a minority of those with Lyme disease had a recognized tick bite (60/325; 18.5%, 95% confidence interval 14.6 – 23.0%). Lack of a tick bite history does not reliably exclude Lyme disease.

Bockenstedt, Jean I. TsaoAbstractBorrelia miyamotoi is a relapsing fever spirochete transmitted by ticks in the Ixodes ricinus complex. In the eastern United States, B. miyamotoi is transmitted by I. scapularis, which also vectors several other pathogens including B. burgdorferi sensu stricto. In contrast to Lyme borreliae, B. miyamotoi can be transmitted vertically from infected female ticks to their progeny. Therefore, in addition to nymphs a...

This study aimed to investigate the presence and perform molecular characterization of Anaplasmataceae, Rickettsia spp., and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) in tick species collected in Corsica. Ticks from cattle (Bos taurus), sheep (Ovis aries), and rodents (Rattus rattus) were collected from May to September 2016. DNA was purified from ticks, submitted to quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and sequenced for phylogenetic analysis. In total, 660 ticks were collected from 111 animals during the study. The most abundant collected tick species from cattle was Rhipicephalus bursa (n = 49...

Authors: Boulanger N, Boyer P, Talagrand-Reboul E, Hansmann Y Abstract Ticks are a major group of arthropod vectors, characterized by the diversity of pathogens they transmit, by their impact on human and animal health, and by their socioeconomic implication especially in countries of the Southern Hemisphere. In Europe, Ixodes is the most important tick due to its wide distribution in the ecosystems and the variety of transmitted pathogens, in particular Borrelia (responsible for Lyme borreliosis), but also the tick-borne encephalitis virus. Their increased presence in the environment since the beginning of the 20t...

Purpose: The South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic is an endemic area of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). In 2017, the inhabitants of Římov municipality developed a serious course of TBE and Lyme borreliosis (LB). This led experts to research and serology examinations of the inhabitants of Římov in order to detect the seroprevalence of TBE and LB.

Purpose: In southern Canada, Lyme disease (LD) is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. Cases have increased from 144 to 987 between 2009 and 2016. The infection is more frequent in children and older adults probably due to increased exposure to high risk areas during outdoor activities. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical presentation and course of illness among children reported in Monteregie, an emerging area from Quebec province located north of New York state.

Bashor, Felicia Keesing, Kathleen LoGiudice, Richard S. OstfeldAbstractTick microbiomes may play an important role in pathogen transmission. However, the drivers of microbiome variation are poorly understood, and this limitation has impeded mechanistic understanding of the functions of microbial communities for pathogen acquisition. The goal of this research was to characterize the role of the blood meal host in structuring the microbiome of Ixodes scapularis, the ...

In this study, we investigated tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wild boar, hare, and fox and their ticks in Turkey. A total of 102 tick pools comprised of 445 ticks and blood samples were analyzed for the presence of bacterial DNA by PCRs targeted rickettsial gltA and ompA genes, 5S-23S rDNA gene for Borrelia spp., and msp4 gene for Anaplasma spp. As a result of PCR and sequence analyses, three pathogenic spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, two SFG rickettsiae with unknown pathogenicity and one pathogenic Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato were detected in samples obtained from wild animals. Rickettsia slovaca was detecte...
