Abstract BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a known complication of hip arthroscopy. We investigated incidence of HO after hip arthroscopy and determined whether revision for HO improved outcome. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 242 patients (140 men and 102 women, mean age: 36.2 ± 9.5 years) who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) between January 2016 and January 2018. The average follow-up period was 22.88 ± 11.74 months (range: 11-34 months). Thirteen (5.37%) cases of HO (six men and seven women, five left hips and eight right hips...

Robert T. Schoen Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) is an emerging viral infection that has spread widely, along with its Aedes vectors, throughout the tropics and beyond, causing explosive epidemics of acute illness and persistent disabling arthritis. The rheumatic symptoms associated with chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection include polyarthralgia, polyarthritis, morning stiffness, joint edema, and erythema. Chronic CHIK arthritis (CCA) often causes severe pain and associated disability. The pathogenesis of CCA is not well understood. Proposed hypotheses include the persistence of a low level of replicating virus in the joint...

ConclusionsHigh compliance rates support the use of the daily electronic PRO diary in large RCTs. Despite the anticipated issues, the daily electronic diary is expected to reduce recall bias and improve the quality of PRO data collection.Trial registrationRA-BEAM (NCT01710358) and RA-BUILD (NCT01721057).

AbstractThe scapholunate ligament stabilizes the scaphoid and lunate of the proximal row in the wrist which allows for proper force transmission with the radius and ulna. Damage to this structure degenerates into arthritis and disability. Controversy exists over the best technique to restore function and reduce pain. A three-dimensional computational model of the wrist and hand was used to investigate the biomechanical effects of scapholunate ligament dissociation and its repair. The model replicated 3D bony anatomy, soft tissue structures, and muscle loading. The model predicted the increased instability caused by the inj...

Joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) represents a significant health burden. Although RA pain is conventionally thought to result from inflammation, it often persists even after control of inflammation with available therapies, suggesting the additional involvements of non-inflammatory mechanisms. Yet, such mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Our in situ hybridization assays suggested that the immune complex receptor Fc γRI was expressed in a subpopulation of joint sensory neurons. Consistent with this finding, the proportion of joint sensory neurons exhibiting a Ca2+ increase in response to IgG-immune complex (...

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common arthritic condition and a leading cause of pain and disability in people 45 years and older. As the biopsychosocial model of pain hypothesizes that pain is dynamically affected by multidimensional factors, there is a growing interest to understand the biological factors that influence pain among older adults. Beta-endorphin is suggested to be involved in pain sensitivity, but few studies have examined the relationship between beta-endorphin and experimental pain sensitivity in older adults.
