INTRODUCTION: Postural instability during walking and tripping over obstacles are the main causes of falls in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Preliminary limited evidence suggests that the length of the prospective follow-up period affects falls pred...

Authors: Alzahrani S, Ezzat W, Elshaer RE, Abd El-Lateef AS, Mohammad HMF, Elkazaz AY, Toraih E, Zaitone SA Abstract Strong evidence proposes that brain oxidative DNA damage and microglia activation contribute to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. Traditional therapeutic regimens for PD can only relieve the symptoms. Tribulus terrestris (T. terrestris), a flowering plant from family Zygophyllaceae, is used in traditional medicine for treating different disorders and exerts neuroprotective and antioxidant effects in experimental models. The current study attempted to test whether treatment with T. terrestris sta...

In this study, we investigated the ameliorative effect of baicalein with low dose L-DOPA (25 mg/kg) on the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) induced Parkinsonism. The gait variability was assessed by a computer-assisted gait analysis system Catwalk. The results showed that MPTP challenged mice had significant gait deficits on dynamic paw function and posture stability. L-DOPA reversed the MPTP induced gait deficits and the effect was positively dose-dependent. The combined treatment of baicalein and under threshold dose of L-DOPA significantly improved gait functions, compared with exclusive low dose L-...

ConclusionsThe main purpose of the current work is to focus on important topics about the microencapsulation of polyphenols, studying the specific case of the Sambucus Nigra L. extracts, including the description of the most important extraction methods for plant samples and of the encapsulation techniques and wall materials used to encapsulate polyphenols. It was also made an approach to the release tests involved in the release phenomenon of the bioactive compounds from the natural resources, including its mechanisms, simulated release media and kinetics.Graphical abstract

AbstractParkinson ’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive condition affecting around 1% of the population older than 60 years. Upon long-term treatment with levodopa, the mainstay of treatment in PD, most patients, especially younger ones exposed to higher doses, will experience symptoms related to end-of-dose d eterioration, peak-dose dyskinesias, and other motor fluctuations. Therapeutic strategies are grounded on modification of oral levodopa pharmacokinetics to extend levodopa benefit and development of new routes of drug delivery (e.g., levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel infusion) or long-acting formula ti...
