We described ZIKV and DENV serological markers and the maternal-fetal t ransfer of antibodies among mothers and neonates after the ZIKV microcephaly outbreak in Northeast Brazil (2016). We included 89 microcephaly cases and 173 neonate controls at time of birth and their mothers. Microcephaly cases were defined as newborns with a particular head circumference (2 SD belo w the mean). Dengue-specific antibodies can cross-react to Zika virus. Brown et  al. demonstrate that dengue-specific antibodies can enhance Zika virus pathogenesis during pregnancy by increasing damage to the placenta. These findings suggest a possible mechanism for the recent increase in severe pregnancy outcomes after Zika virus infection in areas where dengue co-circulates .

In conclusion, limited human and NHP studies indicate a small and non-statistically significant increase in ZIKV viremia in DENV-experienced versus DENV-na ïve hosts; however, there is no evidence that even a possible small increase in ZIKV viremia would correlate with a change in ZIKV clinical phenotype. More data derived from larger sample sizes and improved sero-assays are needed to resolve this question, which has major relevance for clinical prog nosis and vaccine design.

CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous circulation of arboviruses and other agents responsible for congenital infections were observed; however, we did not identify co-infections between arboviruses. (Cell Press) Two new studies provide evidence that previous Dengue infection in pregnant mothers may lead to increased severity of Zika in babies, and that previous Zika infection in mice mothers may increase severity of Dengue infection in their pups. The research, publishing Nov. 14 in the journal Cell Host&Microbe, supports that maternally acquired antibodies for one virus can assist infection by the other by a process unique to flaviviruses.
